GENETIC WEEDS

Once upon a time there was this giant agribusiness company that wanted to completely wipe out and take over small family farms.

The directors paced around the board room or spun aimlessly around in their fancy leather boardroom chairs staring at the ceiling, tapping pencils on blank yellow legal pads and scratching their chins. After weeks of pondering the loopholes and chicanery, one board member suddenly had an idea.

"Let's genetically engineer a fungus that is immune to all herbicides but the one patented herbicide we own!"

It was brilliant! The giant agribusiness company set out to create Soybean Rust. But it was just not good enough, so they called on some local lawn care franchise owners to find out how they spread their weeds.

"Lets make a deal" said one agribusiness board member to a famous lawn care company owner. "We will custom design a weed for you and provide you with the only herbicide that will kill that weed if you spread our weeds on farms for us."

The Lawncare company owner thought about it for a while. He imagined that one day he would no longer get the special herbicide, or that the genetically altered weed would evolve into an unstoppable force. "I'll do it if you pay me a million dollars."

The directors all smiled broadly and rigorously shook the lawncare company owner's hand. From that day forward, farmers were driven into poverty by the high cost of herbicides and were forced into buying expensive genetically altered crops that would survive a genetically altered weed that got out of control.
