Living in Indiana

Once upon a time there was this single white man who lived in Indiana. He had a good job at AT&T Media Services and was personally responsible for earning his company $500,000 a year. He was paid only $12.75 an hour. He was laid off anyway.

After looking for a similar paying job for a year, his unemployment benefits expired so he went to try to get help from the county and the state for his utility bills. They gave him the run-around.

He finally got a job at Lowe's that paid $8.50 an hour. He could survive if he ate Banquet meals when they were on sale, or Raman Noodles. His sister sent him a huge box of microwave popcorn and he was able to eat lunches for a while.

He was living in a house and paying a mortgage of only $460 a month. Unfortunately, his water was supplied by a shallow well. The pump broke and he could not afford to fix it. He would have to wait two weeks for a paycheck and use it all up just to fix the pump, or he could just buy bottled water with which to bathe and flush his toilet. He chose the latter.

He bought two big 2.5 gallon jugs of water and placed one in front of a heating duct, and the other he placed on top of the toilet tank in the bathroom. He filled a plastic 1 quart pot with the warmed water and bathed by first pouring a quart over himself, soaping up, then rinsing with another quart of warmed water. This was repeated no more than five times per "bath" session.

To flush the toilets, he poked holes in the side of the water jug to increase the rate of flow. He then poured the water directly into the bowl. This seemed to work fine until one day, nine months later, he found out he was not using enough water. His whole septic line became hopelessly clogged.

Finally after a year of living without running water, he gave up and moved back to Illinois to live with his mother and go back to school to start his life all over again at age thirty nine.

The End

Ps. a year later he had H&R Block prepare his taxes. His taxable income was under $5,000.00 but he still had to pay the State of Indiana $240.00
